How often should I visit the dentist?
We recommend that every visit the dentist at least every 6 months for regular check ups and cleanings. However, more than 50% of the population would benefit from visits every 3-4 months. At Gateway Dental Care we take the time to treat every patient as an individual and we will help you figure out a dental health plan that works best for you.
What Should I do if I have a dental emergency?
Call as soon as possible. Severe tooth pain, swelling , a broken or knocked out toot, dental trauma or signs of infection may require prompt treatment. Gateway Dental Care offers same-day emergency appointments until 7pm Monday-Thursday as well as on Fridays and Saturdays appointments.
What are the signs of gum disease
Most of the early signs and symptoms of gum disease go undetected at home. Moderate to advanced gum disease can present with red swollen gums or bleeding when brushing that persists longer than 2 weeks. Gum recession, loose teeth or changes in your bite can be signs of more severe periodontal disease. Gum disease is the most common reason adults lose teeth. We do a complimentary periodontal evaluation for all of our patients at Gateway Dental Care.
Can a dental crown be completed in one visit?
Absolutely! Gateway Dental Care offers CEREC same-day crowns. Can-Cam technology allows dental offices to digitally scan and create custom made crowns in about 90 minutes. This means you can leave our office in most cases without a temporary crown or needing a second appointment.
How long do dental implants last?
Dental Implants are designed to last a lifetime, 30-50+ years. The titanium post is designed to permanently fuse with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration. At Gateway Dental Care we use a 3 part implant system in most cases. The post, an abutment and a screw retained crown. This system has become the most commonly used system, because if a crown or abutment fails, the repair is fairly simple and affordable to fix.
Are clear aligners (Invisalign) as effective as traditional braces?
No, traditional wire and bracket braces are still the most effective and predictable way to move teeth. However, in many cases we can achieve similar results with clear aligners (most commonly know as Invisalign). We offer both options, at Gateway Dental Care and we can help you find the right option for you. We offer free orthodontic consults and we have evening and Saturday appointments.
When do wisdom teeth need to be removed?
The most common rule of thumb by dental professionals is that if the crown of the tooth is past the curvature of the ramus of the jaw, the tooth has a good chance it can be kept in, barring any other issues. The most common reasons they need to be removed are impaction, infection, risk of damaging near by teeth, and decay, We recommended having them removed in your late teens to early twenties, as surgery at this age is more predictable and healing is quicker with less risk of a secondary infection. You should be screened around age 16 with a panographic x-ray to evaluate the risks and to develop a plan for extraction when needed before they become painful and an emergency situation.
What options are available if I am anxious about dental treatment?
Dental anxiety is very common, and we have different options for different comfort levels. Nitrous Oxide (more commonly known as laughing gas) is a great option for mild to moderate anxiety. For this option you may not need a driver, as we will give you about 5 mins of oxygen before you leave to reverse the effects. Other options could include an oral sedative like Valium or Halcion and for more sever cases we can use IV sedation. An consultation with the dentist to evaluate your health is needed before sedation can be recommended and prescribed.
